TL;DR
- What: on August 4, 2026, Cloudflare announced Cloudflare Wallets and cloudflare.pay, an identity and payment layer for AI agents.
- How: a person funds an account wallet; each agent gets a virtual wallet with a budget, approved merchants and a maximum transaction size.
- Payments: transactions use the x402 standard, based on HTTP status 402 “Payment Required”, and settle in stablecoins.
- Identity: agents can declare a readable name, such as research.example.cloudflare.pay, so sites know who sent them.
- Status: name reservations are open; payment functionality is rolling out over the coming months.

Until now, AI agents could research, compare and fill in forms, but paying was the step where a human had to take over. Cloudflare’s new wallets are designed to close that gap, with spending limits set by people.
What Cloudflare announced
On August 4, 2026, during its Agents Week, Cloudflare announced two products: Cloudflare Wallets, which let AI agents pay, and cloudflare.pay, which gives them an identity.
“The Internet is shifting from human-driven browsing to agent-driven commerce, and the infrastructure needs to keep up,” said Matthew Prince, Cloudflare’s co-founder and CEO.
How Cloudflare Wallets work
| Level | Who uses it | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Account wallet | The person or company | Holds the balance, in stablecoins at launch |
| Virtual wallet | Each AI agent | Spends within limits set by the owner |
Owners can set, for each agent:
- a spending cap;
- a list of approved merchants;
- a maximum transaction size.
The agent can act autonomously, but it can’t exceed those limits on its own.
According to Search Engine Journal, handle reservations opened immediately, while payment functionality, including onramps and offramps in supported countries, is coming over the following months. Cloudflare hasn’t named specific stablecoins or custody partners.
Agent identity with cloudflare.pay
Each Cloudflare account can receive a stable web address that works as an ID. Owners can extend that identity to specific agents, so an agent may appear as, for example, research.example.cloudflare.pay.
The system builds on Web Bot Auth, which lets agents register their identity with a cryptographic keypair. Declaring identity is optional for agents, but sites can require it as a condition of access.
“When an agent shows up at your door, you need to know who sent it,” Prince said.
The payment rails: x402 and pay per crawl
Cloudflare’s payments use x402, which revives the HTTP status code 402, “Payment Required”. A server can respond to a request with a price, and an agent can pay and retry automatically.
- Coinbase and Cloudflare announced the x402 Foundation in September 2025.
- The standard now operates under a Linux Foundation body whose members include Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Google, Shopify and Stripe.
- Cloudflare’s pay per crawl program lets website owners charge AI crawlers for access to their content.
Why it matters: the web is now mostly bots
In June 2026, Matthew Prince said automated traffic had overtaken human traffic on Cloudflare’s network, earlier than the 2027 timeline he had predicted. His explanation: “A human might open five sites while shopping or researching. An AI agent can hit thousands of pages to answer a single query or complete a task for someone.”
At the same time, publishers are fighting unpaid AI access. Reddit, for example, has licensing deals with Google and OpenAI, and sued Perplexity over scraping in October 2025. Agent identity and payments offer an alternative to blocking: letting known agents in, for a price.
What agent payments could change
- Delegated purchasing. An agent could test several software tools on a small budget, pay for trials and report back with a recommendation.
- Machine-readable commerce. Sites would need prices, availability and terms that agents can read and act on.
- New revenue models. Publishers could charge agents per request instead of relying only on ad impressions from human visitors.
- Two-tier access. Content could remain free for people and carry a micro-fee when an agent consumes it on someone’s behalf.
These are possibilities, not certainties. Adoption depends on merchants, agents and payment partners using the same standards.
What businesses should do now
- Check agent access. Review robots.txt, firewall and bot management settings, and decide which agents you want to allow.
- Make your offer machine-readable. Clear product data, prices, availability and structured data help agents compare and choose.
- Watch the identity layer. Decide whether you’ll require agents to identify themselves before accessing content or checkout.
- Consider pricing for agents. If your content has value for AI systems, programs like pay per crawl may become a revenue stream.
Vyara’s take
“For years, the web ran on human attention: content was free because people looked at ads. If agents can pay a fraction of a cent for the usefulness of your information, that could be the first real alternative to the ad-funded internet. It’s a hypothesis. But one thing is already certain: if an agent can’t read your site, understand your offer and pay you, you don’t exist in that economy.”
