TL;DR
- Meta: the average price per ad rose 12% year over year in Q2 2026, while ad impressions grew 14%.
- Google: the average search CPC reached $5.42 in 2026, up from $5.26. Dynamic Search Ads must move to AI Max by September 2026.
- Why: AI lowers the barrier to launching ads, so more advertisers compete in the same auctions, while platforms remove manual controls.
- Commerce: Google is adding checkout inside search through the Universal Commerce Protocol, Universal Cart and native checkout in ads.
- Upside: AI-referred shoppers converted 42% better than other traffic in March 2026, according to Adobe.

Advertisers on Meta and Google are paying more for every result, while organic traffic from search is shrinking. The causes are the same on both platforms: more competition for attention, and ad systems that hand control from advertisers to AI.
Meta ads: more impressions, higher prices
In its Q2 2026 results, published on July 29, 2026, Meta reported that ad impressions grew 14% year over year and the average price per ad rose 12%. Revenue reached $60.8 billion, up 28%.
Meta is showing more ads, in more placements, and charging more for each of them.
How AI pushes ad prices up
Generative AI has lowered the cost of starting a business. A founder can now create a website, product visuals, ad copy and targeting with tools like ChatGPT or Claude, often without any marketing experience.
More businesses mean more advertisers bidding for the same audiences. In an auction, when demand for attention grows faster than the supply of ad placements, prices rise.
Automation removes the levers advertisers used to pull
Meta’s ad delivery now runs on AI systems such as Andromeda, which selects which ads are eligible to be shown, and the Generative Ads Recommendation Model (GEM), which Meta describes as the central model behind its ads recommendations.
Automation features such as Advantage+ were once optional. Advertisers increasingly report accounts in which they can no longer be switched off. Manual control over audiences, placements and creatives is shrinking.
In June 2025, the Wall Street Journal reported that Meta aims to fully automate ad creation and targeting by the end of 2026. Advertisers would provide a product image and a budget, and Meta’s AI would generate the ad and decide who sees it.
The practical effect: when targeting and creative decisions move to the algorithm, budget becomes the main setting an advertiser still controls.
Why new ad accounts pay the most
New ad accounts have no conversion history and no signals for the system to learn from. Their ads compete in the same auctions as accounts with years of data, which often makes them the most expensive.
Early results can also mislead. A strong first wave of sales often comes from a small, cheap and untapped audience. Once it is exhausted, costs rise sharply, even if nothing in the campaign settings has changed.
Google: AI Max, no keywords and checkout inside search
At Google Marketing Live on May 20, 2026, Google confirmed two shifts:
- AI Max replaces Dynamic Search Ads. Existing DSA campaigns are being upgraded automatically, with a mandatory migration deadline in September 2026.
- Keywords lose their central role. “You can’t choose keywords anymore,” said Vidhya Srinivasan, VP and GM of Google Ads and Commerce.
Google is also building a transaction layer into search:
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) | Protocol that lets AI agents complete purchases with merchants, launched in January 2026 |
| Universal Cart | Cross-merchant shopping cart with price tracking and back-in-stock alerts, rolling out in the US since May 2026 |
| Native checkout in ads | Lets shoppers apply a discount and pay with Google Pay directly from an ad |
When purchases happen inside Google, merchants lose visibility into how shoppers compared offers before buying.
Google Ads CPC benchmarks
According to WordStream’s 2026 benchmarks, based on 13,474 US search campaigns:
| Metric | 2025 | 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Average cost per click | $5.26 | $5.42 |
| Industries with rising CPC | 87% | — |
| Real estate CPC change | — | +27.27% |
The 2025 figures come from WordStream’s 2025 report. The average CPC has more than doubled since 2016, when it was $2.32.
AI-referred traffic converts better
The same shift has an upside. According to Adobe Digital Insights, visitors who reach US retail sites from AI assistants, compared with other visitors:
- spend 48% more time on site;
- view 13% more pages per visit;
- generate 37% more revenue per visit.
In March 2026, AI-referred traffic converted 42% better than non-AI traffic. A year earlier, it converted at almost half the rate. Shoppers arriving from AI assistants have usually compared options already.
Businesses optimized for generative engine optimization (GEO), so that ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews can read and recommend them, are positioned to capture this traffic.
What businesses can do
- Measure what actually sells. Track revenue and margin by product and channel in structured data, not from memory.
- Plan beyond one platform. A marketing strategy should define channels, budgets, targeting and expected return months ahead.
- Delegate operations. Owners who handle every order themselves have little time left for strategy.
- Build owned channels. Customer lists, email, reputation and partnerships can’t be switched off by an algorithm.
- Make the website readable for AI. Pages that AI systems can crawl, understand and cite are more likely to be recommended.
Vyara’s take
“Ad platforms are becoming black boxes that only ask for one thing: more budget. If Meta is your only source of sales, ask yourself honestly whether you have a business or a Facebook page that makes money. A business is a predictable system that works even when you’re not in the room. Traffic isn’t dying. It’s getting smaller and better, and it goes to the businesses AI understands and trusts.”
